The freedom to go where you want and at your own speed...

The UK has a strong sailing heritage. It's one of the Olympic sports where we usually bring home the medals and this year has been no exception, so interest in the sport is high. Sailing holidays tend to fall into 3 categories - charter, flotilla or learn to sail. If you have appropriate qualifications and can sail confidently, a bareback charter gives you the freedom to go where you want and at your own speed. Not enough experience to go it alone? You can still enjoy an independent holiday by hiring a professional skipper; or try a flotilla holiday, where a group of yachts sail together with a lead yacht acting as guide. Read on for sailing holiday ideas.

Where to go?

UK

As an island, the UK provides a wealth of opportunities for a sailing holiday around our large and diverse coastline. Scotland, with its superb scenery, relatively empty waterways and excellent facilities is a good choice for everyone from experienced to aspiring sailors. Although there is demanding sailing, many areas are ideal for those enjoying their first taste of sailing. And with more than 25 sailing schools around Scotland, it’s a great place to learn or hone your skills.

Further south, Devon is great for sailing enthusiasts, with many picturesque bases for your holiday like Dartmouth and Salcombe. Devon’s maritime tradition is celebrated throughout the year with a number of festivals and regattas including the famous Dartmouth Royal Regatta in August.

Europe

The Greek Islands are an ideal yachting location with a great climate and scenery to die for! A one-way charter is a good way to explore the islands – you can go further and see more. Many people chose a flotilla holiday in Greece, where you sail your own boat but sail along with other boats.

Ireland has a long and distinguished tradition of sailing and regularly celebrates it with a number of regattas like The Roundstone Regatta, which dates back to the 1890’s. The Royal Cork Yacht Club, founded in 1720 is the oldest yacht club in the world. If you would like to sample some of the delights Ireland has to offer, a number of companies provide sailing holidays or boat charters.

And Beyond

For something altogether more tropical, why not try a sailing holiday in The Seychelles or The Caribbean? The Seychelles has sea and weather conditions which make it perfect for year-round sailing. With breath-taking scenery, amazing flora and fauna, colourful marine life and gentle unhurried pace of life – what more could you ask for? Well maybe you’d prefer the Caribbean? The freedom to hop from island to island, exploring at your own pace, discovering deserted beaches inaccessible from land. Sounds tempting but plan your trip carefully and don’t forget the hurricane season!
