energetic: Other Watersports

From windsurfing in Northumberland to wakeboarding in Sri Lanka – you are spoilt for choice.

Watersports are a great choice for an activity holiday. We’ve given sailing, canoeing and diving there own pages but what about the many other watersports on offer? From windsurfing in Devon, kitesurfing in Lanzarote, surfing in Biarritz, white water rafting in New Zealand to wakeboarding in Sri Lanka – you are spoilt for choice. By the way, for those of you who don’t know, wakeboarding is a relatively new sport and is a cross between waterskiing and snowboarding. Both feet are strapped to a single board and you’re towed behind a speedboat that makes a wake for you to surf. Tempted?

Where to go?

UK

There are a number of great locations for activity holidays in the UK for all types of watersports. You can even sample white water rafting in Nottingham at the National Watersports Centre. For a more picturesque experience, the whole Northumberland coastline is a designated area of outstanding natural beauty and also has some great windsurfing locations, with miles of great sandy beaches and some inland lakes too. If you fancy trying your hand at jet skiing, Torbay is a popular choice. It has a growing reputation as ‘jet ski-friendly' resort as well as having over 20 miles of coastline to explore plus the Teign Estuary and River Dart.

Europe

Tarifa, on the southern tip of Spain, just a few miles from Africa across the Straits of Gibraltar, is great for windsurfing and kitesurfing. Known as 'the Wind Capital', conditions are ideal with strong side shore winds, making the experience safe and relatively easy. Surfing is getting more and more popular and Biarritz in Southern France is a good place to go to experience the sport. The conditions are excellent and low cost airlines fly into Biarritz making it very accessible. If you’d like to sample more than one activity on your holiday, some companies offer watersports holidays in many European resorts where you can enjoy waterskiing, wakeboarding, wind and kitesurfing as well as sailing.

And Beyond

If you’d like to experience the fun, excitement and adventure of whitewater rafting, The Grand Canyon is one of the worlds' best trips. It has 226 miles of rafting amidst awesome scenery and is a truly stunning experience. If you prefer to have some variety in your holiday, some companies offer trips which incorporate different activities such as a wonderful African safari.
