energetic: Other Snow Sports

...if you’re feeling really adventurous you can try your hand at ice climbing!

Winter activity holidays are usually focussed on skiing and snowboarding, but they’re not the only things to do in the snow. Many places now have a host of different holiday ideas to tempt you, from the sedate to the downright dangerous. You can find snow-shoeing, paragliding, snowmobiling, ice fishing or dog sledding on offer and if you’re feeling really adventurous you can try your hand at ice climbing! Snow sports can be enjoyed all year round in locations to suit all budgets – what are you waiting for?

Where to go?

UK

Scotland has the only winter sports resorts in the UK and you can choose from Glencoe, Glenshee, Cairngorm, The Lecht or The Nevis Range. The snow is not always reliable so there isn’t an abundance of activities on offer other than skiing and snowboarding. However, in The Lecht you can have a go at snow tubing and The Nevis Range is a great location for winter climbing. You can also enjoy winter climbing in other areas of the UK such as The Lake District and Snowdonia.

Europe

Europe is blessed with a wealth of winter sports destinations from The Sierra Nevada in Southern Spain; Finnish Karelia; The Dolomites in Italy and The Alps, to name just a few. All areas offer fantastic scenery and tourism is generally well developed so you will find a number of activities on offer. Experience the thrill of speeding through the snow on a snowmobile; snow-shoe in the beautiful white wilderness or have the adventure of a lifetime driving a dog sled. The season usually lasts from Christmas at least until Easter.

And Beyond

Dog sled racing is the state sport of Alaska and is extremely popular throughout North America. The recreational form is widely available in most US and Canadian winter sports locations along with snowmobiling and ice fishing, which are also very popular. Both Canada and The USA offer a variety of resorts to choose from as well as specific areas for dog sledding. All offer breathtaking scenery, fresh air and a sense of space.
