The Northumberland coast is a bird watcher's paradise ...

Northumberland, also called Northumbria is the most northerly county in England. Often referred to as 'The Best Kept Secret' in England, it borders Cumbria to the west, County Durham to the south and Tyne and Wear to the south east, as well as having a border with Scotland. The 100 mile long Northumberland Coast, form Berwick upon Tweed to Tynemouth, is a designated Area Of Outstanding Beauty and is a popular area for holiday makers. One of Northumberland's most famous landmarks is Hadrian's Wall. Built by Roman Emperor Hadrian almost 2,000 years ago, to “separate the Romans from the Barbarians”, it is now England's largest World Heritage Site.

Why should I go there?

Northumberland has something for everyone - peace and quiet, beautiful scenery, activity holiday opportunities, heritage, wildlife and much more. Sharing a border with Scotland has resulted in many battles in days gone by and it is no surprise that there are more castles in Northumberland than anywhere else in England. Alnwick Castle, the second largest inhabited castle in England and home to the Duke and Duchess of Northumberland, is now famous as the location for Hogwarts School in the Harry Potter films.

The Farne Islands have one of Europe's most important nature reserves, with puffins, terns, guillemots, shags and eider ducks nesting each year. The Northumberland coast is a bird watcher's paradise with a number of hides where you can watch rare and diverse birdlife. The Outer Farne Islands are home to over 4,000 Atlantic grey seals.
